Borobudor Day 2

View Indonesia 2012 on mjschrum's travel map.

At Borobodur for an amazing sunrise, inspiringly beautiful and peacefully free of the crowds and tour groups that comb the temple most of the day. We took the advice of Manohara hotel staff and skipped the “sunrise tour.” We were at through the gate at 5:50 AM and on top of the ruins by 6.
We turned around at the top of the temple after the climb and saw this:
There are thousands of reliefs surrounding each layer of the temple. Each level represents another step toward enlightenment. The detail and beauty of the artistry is on the level of Anghor Watt. Pilgrims do a 5 km circumnavigation of these reliefs before arriving at the top.

Borobudor Day 1

Manohara hotel on grounds of Borobodur, a World Heritage Site.
Walked around town looking for snacks and refreshments and then, as an afterthought, went up to Borobudor at 4 pm. (If you stay at the Manohara you can come and go as you please) We caught the sunset crowd and all the Javanese taking last minute family pictures before departure.DSCN1193.jpg
Took some photos ourselves of the sunset and then found our way back to the hotel after being exited by the young security guards out of the temple grounds at closing time.

Flew to Yogya on July 3.
Stayed at the All Seasons Hotel – very smart looking and everyone is super helpful. Conveniently located near supermarket to stock up on Bintang and water.DSCN1182.jpg
In the afternoon, in-house spa was full for massages so off to the roof top pool bar for our 1st Bintang
Gado Gado and Bintang for dinner
The next day, not surprisingly rearranged our plans and decided to go from Yogya directly to Flores. Got tickets from Yogya to Maumere. Will travel across Flores overland and return from Labuan Bajo to Denpasar. Then - off to Borobudor!
